It's been a banner year.Soooo....Now it's only June 30 and my frost date isn't until October/November if I push it.
What do I plant next!?

More squash? I mean you don't have nearly 101 recipes yet. So you need more to trail them.

Well, at least you did a good public service to your fellow gardeners by posting the photo, I've never seen it before, only read about it and haven't grown squash before so now I know exactly what I'm looking for. Tomorrow is my day to go peer under the squash leaf canopy... I'm scared!
ReplyDeleteRibbit, I planted peanuts this late last year and got a great harvest in October from only 4 or 5 plants, enough to have fun with, anyways. You can even plant the raw kind from the grocery store if you don't have a source... fun for the kids anyway!
ReplyDeleteYou got me there. It should really be titled the 101 times I've cooked squash this year. I even grated it into the stuffed peppers I made tonight.

I actually got mine at a seed swap here in town, but our feed & seed sells bins of planting peanuts as they are a cash crop here. I think you are in peanut country too, check out a local deal like Southern States or something but all else failing, just get some "raw" peanuts in the shell at the store in the bulk bin, open them up and plant the peanuts! They do well here stuck right into the yucky old sandy clay that we have here, and powered right throught the heat and the bugs didn't touch them... I guess that's why the farmers do it here LOL. Cool thing - when they grow, little "pegs" stick out and get heavy which weighs down the branch to the dirt and the peanuts grow there, they are fun. Also a very neat, tidy and compact plant.

ReplyDeleteI have had the best luck with Peaches and Cream corn. It seems to grow really well for me compared to Silver Queen. If you try some peaches and cream fresh picked from the garden you will grow it every year.

My frost date is about the same. I'm thinking beans, another zuke, some more cukes for pickles....? The large veggie producers around here replant beans around Sept.

Terrible, isn't it. No, I pulled at the vine to move it out of the way and the sucker just came right off. It wasn't held on but by a thread.
ReplyDeleteThinking of giving zipper/cream crowder peas another go. The ants got them bad last year - who knew they would eat the blossoms like that! We'll try to give it another go.
Or....I have time for more tomatoes, I bet, especially if I root one or two of those brandywine suckers..... Now THAT, may be worth it. I'd surely have to buy more cages, however.
