  3. Wait - WHAT!?!? Now I am all teary eyed. There is nothing I hate more than dogs dying. People are tough, but with any luck we get a good long life in beforehand, and dogs.....well they deserve longer than they get on this good earth. So sorry to hear his time had come. The kids must be devastated. :(

  5. Thanks, guys. He was a good dog. About a month or so ago he started limping. We thought he had just wrenched his shoulder. Time went on and he used the leg less and less and then what obviously was a massive growth began to appear under the skin where the leg met the body. His muscles atrophied from not using the leg to the point where he just dragged it behind him. He couldn't walk, couldn't get up, stopped eating and drinking and began to pee blood and himself when he couldn't get up any longer. He had gotten that vacant look in his eye and cried most of last night.
    It was time.

Last night both kids - independently of themselves - went to get his two favorite toys and put them by his head along with pictures of themselves. They kissed him good-bye this morning before they left for school.

For a dog who wasn't supposed to live as a puppy, he had 9 wonderful years. Not too shabby for a Great Dane.

  7. Oh I am so sorry. Dogs become family and it is hard when they pass on.

  8. I'll miss Gibby. He was so lucky that you fell for him that day at Harley. I still have my "Hogs for Dogs" pin you gave me. Hang in there, thinking of you and the kids tonight.

  9. Oh, no! I was so in love with Gibson. I even have his picture on my computer, the one where he was trying to save the boy in the snow. How sad that he's gone, but how wonderful that he had such a good life before he got ill. I'll miss you too, Big. Sleep now, without pain.

  12. Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear this! What a beautiful dog, and you are right though, 9 years is an amazing amount of time for that breed to get to have with a loving family. We had a Bernese Mountain dog that lived 9 yrs when their expectancy is about 6, I always say that he lived long enough for the kids to always remember what a great dog their "first dog" was and he set the bar very high for any subsequent family dogs. Hugs to you and the kids...
