Peppers

The banana peppers are still going strong and the cayenne peppers are turning red at an amazing pace. They're so beautiful! My oven doesn't go low enough and I don't have a dehydrator, so I'm trying to hang dry them. I wash them well and thread a piece of thick thread through the base of the stem of each one and tie the two ends together. I then take another piece of string and tie the length of peppers to the shelves in my cabinet door. Because they're hanging in a dark place (unless, of course, the door is open) they should retain most of their color.

The picture looks much nicer if you ignore my messy pantry door.

I'll probably grind these up and make some red pepper flakes.

The morning comes early. Sweet gardening dreams.

  1. Those peppers really are beautiful. I wish I grew a hot pepper this year, all mine are very mild.

  2. Your peppers are gorgeous! I have decided to let my second wave of jalapenos go to red for "something different"...but really is was kind of just to buy me some time before having to pick & preserve them - alas mine are turning red at breakneck speed too, so I will have to pick them this weekend!

    How will you use them?

Love how you tied them together they looks so pretty... just need some braided garlic to go with them!

  5. I think a thread of dried peppers is really beautiful to look at. These are particularly nice with their shape and red hot coloring.

  6. Dan, we're not much pepper eaters at all. The man will eat bell peppers, but those never seem to get any color. The only things doing much of anything are these hot peppers. I think the red pepper flakes may make good gifts.

  8. Hi MissyM! Thanks! I love them hung up as well, I only wish I could do it where I could see them, but if I did, they wouldn't keep the color. I like the color so much more. I'd love to paint a room that color!

  9. oooo, Tony, Garlic. I didn't do garlic this year, but that's a cool idea for next year! I'll most likely crush it all for gifts or give them away just like this.
