Ok, one more thing. What in the world is this rotten snot rocket looking thing that I found writhing by my okra. What damage could it have caused and do I need to start looking for eggs or something?
ribbit - you have found either a japanese, or june beetle grub. It overwinters in the ground, feeding on the roots of grass. If you have applied any kind of chemicals recently, then the rainfall probably let it penetrate the earth - which brought this thing to the surface.
You know, last night I put down some fire ant killer not far from the beds. It hasn't rained since then, but you're right. That's exactly what it looks like. Odd that it was able to crawl up a 12 inch bed.
I'm a wife, teacher and mom of two who came by gardening accidentally in order to appease a fussy child in a big-box hardware store. He saw yellow pear tomatoes (his favorite color) and we became container gardeners.
As it goes with anything involving children, my interest far outlasted his and now we have a square foot garden in our corner yard.
As long as we can battle the bugs and keep the dog from the soil, we might have some fun.
Harvest:
2009 TOTAL ---- 136 lbs
2010 TOTAL ---- I stink. I gave up weighing.
