Dear Mr. Nefarious Seedling Eater,

It seems we are at an impasse.

I am disheartened to see your antics of this past fall have transferred to the spring. Your decisions to prey on the weak, the feeble, and the vulnerable have less than endeared me to your character. You nibble on seedlings on the ground. Understandable. The yard is your home as well, but then last fall you chanced to hazard the romp up the deck stairs, over the screen mesh of the porch and then onto the deck where you dined on my potted Swiss chard. You've done the same again to my cole crop seedlings. Is nothing sacred?

I suppose I should thank you for decimating my week old seedlings instead of well established ones, however I'm not feeling charitably solicitous for your discerning tastes have led you to nibble only on the few growing broccoli seedlings and not the plethora of cabbage or cauliflower ones I started for no reason. Not that this is an invitation to lunch tomorrow, but it illustrates my consternation.

I will not be thwarted, Mr. Nefarious Seedling Eater. You may have won this round, but the weekend is fast approaching and I'm a fair shot with a straw and spit ball.

Until then,
Ribbit

  1. Sorry to hear about you seedlings.

I've never wanted to own a gun...that is, until I planted my first garden last fall. I plan on keeping my broccoli and cabbages under netting or row cover for the entire summer.

P.S. I heard squirrels make for good eating.

  2. It's amazing the ire we can muster over a stupid furry animal that we could easily drop-kick the length of a football field.

  3. Straw and spit ball? I thought better of you, Ribbit. I'd say nothing short of a pellet gun would do.

  4. Oh I've got the pellet gun. I was going for more of the stealth, who's got ya now, Chuck Noris can kill you with a spit ball type fear. I just didn't mention the flesh eating virus the spit ball would be laced with.

  5. I'll trade you your squirrel for my skunk! Last year, all my veggies got sprayed by a skunk, yuck! good luck, hopefully he will find greener pastures soon.... (maybe you should do an undercover mission and go plant yummy stuff in your neighbor's year in the dark, lol!)

  7. If only there were "trap crops" for the critters huh?

Do you have cats or dogs? This is kind of icky, but I read to spread the pet hair around the garden to keep the little munchers at bay. For me it has worked like a charm! Tjose seedlings need a dusting of dog dander! ;)

  8. I'm so sorry. One of my favorite knit bloggers has a fleece-stealing squirrel when she spins. . . they're baad people.

  9. I do have a dog, but he's as much of a hinderance to gardening as other critters are. He's been known to eat tomato plants in a single chomp.

Stefaneener, we used to brush our malamute and then throw his fur outside for the birds to use for their nests. Then, they'd dive-bomb him to get his fur when there wasn't any in the yard!

  10. Nasty seedling eater. I keep threatening my chipmunks. I tell them I'm going to buy a sling shot and then they are toast, but I think they just chitter behind my back.

Now, I'd just like to say: OH NOZE! I hope you catch the malevolent interloper.
