So, What About Those Hanging Pots?

Last year I had the idea that I was going to run cucumbers and beans out of hanging pots to vine around my deck rail. It so didn't work. The cucumbers were curled for some reason and the beans just weren't having any of it. We just can't have empty pots hanging around, now, can we? Seriously, though. So while the boy and I were picking up the potting soil to repot his blueberries we picked up a few strawberry transplants as well.
I have three hanging pots of strawberries hanging from hooks on the deck and another one that I haven't transplanted yet....when we got the transplant home we noticed it was infested with little red ants. I've left it in the original container in the front yard hoping that the ants will find a new home over the week. I'll try to fit them into their final pot this weekend.

I've heard that strawberries grown in pots are virtually tasteless, but I think it's more about just seeing them grow that will entertain the boy. Who knows, we may get lucky. That is if they survive the 28 degree lows over the next two nights. Shoot, we were in the 60's this weekend. This new cold snap is a cruel joke.

The morning comes early. Sweet gardening dreams.

  1. Yep, alot of people that planted out last weekend will surely have dead plants later this week. Ya gotta love this crazy weather....

  2. EG, It's all about the pots, baby. They can come inside to the garage. However, I think I'll leave the potatoes and just bring in the strawberries. They're far too many potato pots to bring in.

  3. I can imagine you hauling potato pots. Strawberries, yes.

  4. I agree - mobile planters are a lifesaver when unexpected cold temps arrive. Those potatoes will be fine. My grandpaw used to plant potatoes in November/December each year, and when the weather became favorable, they'd sprout sometime in February.

  5. Those are some happy looking strawberry plants. I had a few plants come up on their own either from the birds or compost. I have them in a window box and am hoping for some strawberries this year!

  6. In the past, I've grown strawberries in containers with mixed results. Although this won't stop me from trying again this year. :)

I love the look of edibles in hanging baskets. At the very least, they will be beautiful to look at.

  7. I know what you mean about the cold snap, I was planning to sow peas this weekend, but the forecast is for snow showers and doesn't look like the temps in the foreseeable future will allow it! I only need about 5 more degrees, come on already!! You could try greens in the baskets, although they won't trail and won't be nearly as entertaining as berries, good luck!

  8. It is really worth bringing at least one strawberry plant into the greenhouse for an extra early crop! they just hate having their roots waterlogged so should do well in a pot.

  9. One good reason to grow strawberries in hanging pots...keep those slugs away. I may have to grow a lot more plants this way this year.

  10. No wet roots. THat's some awesome advice. Those pots have a watering spout from beneath and they tend to hold water when it rains. I'll make a concerted effort to tip them when it rains.
    Fantastic!

Slugs are a huge issue here as well. They're just so icky.

  11. Now that's an idea Ribbit, strawberries in hanging pots. I like it, but... since I put my potatoes in pots several weeks ago and with all the little seedlings coming up, I think I'll stick to them growing in the garden. ;) The grandchild, however, might like the idea. Have a great weekend.
