Signs of Spring: The Gardener, Herself's, Edition

Signs of Spring are not isolated to flowers and birds alone. The gardener, him or herself, can also add to the spectacle.

Crufty soil, dirt, mud, encrusted gloves:
Yes, I borrowed my daughter's pink gloves to wear inside the garden gloves since it's still blasted cold outside at night.

The crufty gloves are not to be outdone by the fabulously filthy sweatshirt and jeans:
I've been filling and tilling the garden. Signs of the new gardening year are everywhere and I'm eager to be a part of it.

Yes, Mom. That's real dirt and it may or may not perfectly wash out. It's perfect.
The morning comes early. Sweet gardening dreams.

  1. It'll probably be a while longer before I plunge my hands (no gloves!) into the soil for the first time of the year. My main problem is waiting for compost to fill with. ( I need alot of compost to fill the deeper bed )

  2. Ahhhh, the good kind of dirty. I know I've had a successful day of gardening when my gloves stand up by themselves.

  3. I can't help it. I am a glove gal. I blister up really quick on my hands if I don't.

You're cooler than I am, making your own compost. Since I fetch mine, I don't have to worry about that end of it. The next sunny stretch (possibly next week or the next), I'm putting in the carrots and radishes!

  6. I sure did, Sheila!! I just went out there to finish tilling everything in. I'm a happy girl.

  7. You have the right to get dirty, girl! Let your Dirt Flag fly :D

  8. So jealous! I can't wait until I can get out into the dirt. It will be about 2 months before I can really get out there.

  9. I love it! More grown ups should play in the dirt. I'm looking forward to getting all sweaty and gross...hopefully, it will help me shed the couple of pounds that I tend to put on during the winter.

  10. Ribbit I love those jeans... signs of something wonderful happening. ;)

  11. Awesome! I always feel so accomplished and "full of myself" when I have some good dirtied up jeans on!

  12. A couple of more months!? I'm crying for you.

You know, guys, I thought I'd be a lot more sore than I am. I've been out there three nights in a row, shoveling, dragging, raking and tilling. I was looking forward to the feeling of sore muscles as a sign of a job well done. Yes, I was a little sore in my back and I felt a hint of tightness in my shoulders, but what I felt this time more than anything was 'old lady hurt.' My knee joints and the joint between my big toe and foot are just killing me. Ah, how our bodies give way.

  13. I have jeans with perma-dirt where I rub my hands during outdoor work. And shoes that will never quite be the same.
Tangible clues, and until I get a tattoo, it's all there is.

  14. Looks like a gardener was at work! I remember filling some new beds last spring in the rain. I was mud from head to toe. It was great :-)

  16. This is for Mom. Tell ribbit about being adopted and that she was born on a farm. :o) John

  17. What a fashion statement! Them's my kind of wares! I will keep wearing my gardening clothes even when they are like that for a few days! Shocking I know!! I am overflowing with mud envy!! ;>))

  18. Carol, not disgusting at all. Those clothes were on their second day of grime when I took the picture. I used them one last time before I put them in the wash. No use making more things dirty than I need to.

  19. Oooops never mind. I know from your postings and activities(gardening) You know that everybody loves you including your adoptive parents. Love John

  20. There's no oops at all, John! I'm proud to be adopted and I thought the comment was an interesting observation by you. Who knows? And that's the beauty of the whole thing.

  21. Screw the fashion magazines. This is my kind of clothing! I can see you were out in our region's good weather yesterday, like me. ;)

  22. Most certainly, Meredith! Looks like more rain's coming our way this weekend as well. I can't wait for a dry spell. I'm ready to plant, baby!

  23. For someone who used to hate playing in the sand you've come a long way baby!

  24. This isn't sand, Mom (I'm assuming). It's dirt. When you're covered in wet dirt you don't look like a tater tot and dirt brushes or washes off easily. Sand is diabolical. It's pure evil.
