Told 'Ya There Would Be Problems.

On my way to school this morning around 6:10 AM, I heard on the radio that several school systems in the state were closed due to flooding. Well, we knew there would be something that happened. The particular county in which I teach, which wasn't closed, had recordings of 7-9 inches since Thursday.

That is, we weren't closed. We were delayed. Something which I discovered pulling into the parking lot at 6:35 AM. The parents who had already dropped of their kids or kids who had already driven to school, found this out as well. The delay was for 90 minutes initially which was doable. We just put the kids (200 or so of them) in the commons area (cafeteria) and let them hang out. Then the word came we were delayed for two hours....and then at 8:30AM we find out that school has been canceled. What did we do with the kids? That's a story I don't care to repeat. The decision on how to handle that was not a good one and quite frankly I hope the school board gets overloaded with phone calls. To cancel school so late in the morning when you've got kids milling around already whose parents have already left for work. Hopefully, the lower grades, whose schools hadn't started yet anyway, were able to get the word to parents beforehand.

It was just a nightmare, but with roads washed out all over the county and the schools themselves flooded through, I don't see what other decision they could make, but they should have made it sooner than they did.

So now I'm home, in the rain, wondering if the system will have us make up this day or just take a snow day for it. I'm wondering also if they'll cancel tomorrow or relocate schools to local churches since the rain is still coming in and the bridges can't be rebuilt or schools dried out in a day with the additional rain still to come.

I triple dog dare those cucumbers to go bitter, now.

  1. Maybe you can enjoy your unexpected time off glaring at the cukes?

  2. That's quite unfortunate. Hey, it's rained here the same amount, and my poor zucchini will surely die from the excess. I'm just sitting here at my desk, relishing recent events during one particular harvest....(You know, the one you're anxious to see) Hehe. I'll get the video uploaded this week.

  3. unbelievable! We had the other end of the scale on that last year - they cancelled school for 2 days the day before a snowstorm was expected, and ended up having NO SNOW! And had to make it up... school didn't let out until the end of JUNE!

  4. It's just absurd. We just got reports that since last night, some places in ATL have gotten 9-15 inches of rain...SINCE LAST NIGHT!!!! THen, you have to remember that this has been going on since Thursday last week and not expected to stop until Wednesday of this week. There are muslides, drownings, missing people, trees down, and houses upon houses flooded. It's just amazing the damage water can do.

  5. Absolutely horrible decision making from whomever makes the final decision to cancel school. I hope no one was injured attempting to navigate the roads on their way to school or back home once school was cancelled.

  8. Winter, I'm there with you. If school was to be canceled, it should have been before 4:00AM like it is on snow days, the only problem still being that people wouldn't have known to look for the closing notices. The only thing I can offer is that roads were washing away just when the busses started to run, so closing late was their only option. Schools in neighboring counties now are declaring states of emergenices and letting schools out early as well. I'm worried as well. All we can do is hope for the best and if they decide to close again tomorrow (more storms are coming tonight) that they let us know ahead of time.

  11. You know, we'll occasionally get a few days of rain here and there from hurricanes or something, but this isn't a hurricane, it's just a system that's sticking around.
    Odd, it is for sure.

    BTW, it's pouring again.
