I had a female zucchini open today!! No less than six more female squash and zucchini are looking like they'll open tomorrow.
However, there's not a male in sight which is crazy talk.
I've never had females open before males - let alone this many. The plants better not tap themselves out of females. I'll have a duck if they do.
Anyone know if there's a sperm bank for zucchini out there?
Took tons of pictures yesterday. I'll get those up really soon. The difference a month makes is amazing.
The morning comes early - especially when storms only seem to come at night. EG - hope you and your family are well. Sweet gardening dreams.
Well little zukes are delicious so I'd just eat them up that way and call it gourmet.
ReplyDeleteFigured that's what I'll do, but you never can stop hoping they got pollinated from somewhere, but by the time you figure that out, they're long gone. Think I'll hedge my bets and have a little appetizer for dinner. A very little one. ;)
ReplyDeleteMan! I wonder what's in my soil mix - think that may be the deciding factor in ALL the different plants only producing females? WILL they tap out?
Glad to see a post from you. I am worrying a lot about my blogging friends right now.
ReplyDeleteI hope a male zucchini bloom appears soon.
Seriously, GM! These storms have been nuts. Still waiting to hear from EG. His absence has got me nervous as I figured he'd be the first to shout the 'All's clear.'
ReplyDeleteI've also been worried about EG. The last I heard, he was bringing the dog in to keep her out of the storm. Franklin County got hit pretty hard, I hope he and his family are safe.
ReplyDeleteFried zucchini blossoms? I've never eaten them, I've heard they're good.
I know, I am very worried about EG, he hasn't even published the comments from his last post. I hope he and his family are all ok.
ReplyDeleteI had the same problem last year. I had to pick a male flower from the Haven garden and bring it home to hand pollinate. Crazy! Did I ever get any male flower? yes but never when a female was open. So I would pick them and put them in a ziplock baggy and keep t hem in the fridge (as Granny suggested) and hand pollinate.
ReplyDeleteThat is crazy talk! Looking forward to your pictures!
ReplyDeleteI, too, am looking forward to a post from EG!
If the male blooms never come you could harvest the female blooms and stuff them. Very fancy restaurant have items like that are their menu.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness EG was able to post last night to let us know he and his family are ok.
ReplyDeleteI never have enough blossoms to try this, but want to some day Jamie Oliver's Crispy Zucchini Flowers Stuffed with Ricotta and Mint
I saw him publish all his comments last night about 10 but didn't see a follow up post last evening, I hope at least it means all is okay if he was online publishing comments!
