Can't Catch the Cherokee

I'm always in disbelief when I look at the Cherokee Purple tomato plants and see how many flowers and fruit it has. I've never had a tomato produce so much as this one seems like it's going to. Just look at all of these flowers!
And then, there are the tomatoes that have already set. Mind you, this is one plant.
And more tomatoes:
And more, more tomatoes! I counted 42 tomatoes on this one plant and that's not including the flowers that haven't set fruit yet. It's just amazing. Look at what I've been missing by only planting dinky tomatoes in the past!

Thank you Dan!

  1. Wow, that's amazing that you have 42 tomatoes on one plant! I think you are going to be very busy when they start to ripen!

  3. They look fantastic! I think I may be officially mourning some tomatoes with you very soon, I can't identify the problem for sure, but 2 different strains of heirlooms I am growing are curling and browning from the bottom up, I intend to investigate further this afternoon. If so, I am sure it has spread to my others since they are in a row down the fenceline! Looks like I may be going to buy my first nursery hybrid plants and have them in reserve!

  4. Oh, for the love of Pete. Between your super tomato and The Idiot Gardener's really gorgeous crops, I'm feeling like an old has-been this morning! I have one little end-of-my-pinkie sized tomato on my 40 or so plants. But I'm still happy to see your (and TIG's) success.

  5. I'm almost wondering if I need to cut off some of the tomatoes to make sure they all ripen and don't starve the plant for energy, but I keep thinking it wouldn't flower like it is if it's struggling.

Granny, Just remember that I'm in a much, much warmer climate and got quite the head start this year because of our very early summer weather. I'll stop producing anything come July when it's too darn hot for anything to grow.

  6. 42 tomatoes on one plant! How exciting! It's a good thing you have sturdy cage around that plant!

I counted 17 on one plant today and I got excited! Not even close to 42! :)

  10. Obviously I will have to get some seeds for this tomato to plant in fall. You must be doing something right.

  11. Ribbit, those tomato plants love you! and potatoes and peppers already? We are just hoping for some sunshine as it has rained nearly every day for the last 3 weeks. Not complaining of course as broccoli and many "greens" have been harvested. Have a wonderful week.

  12. Oh wow! My Cherokee plants don't have nearly as many flowers. If you're afraid of starving the plant, maybe you should spray your them with some fish or sea weed emulsion every couple of weeks to give them a boost! Can't wait to see them all ripen.

  13. I'd like to find a seed package of a variety of cool tomatoes. LOL. I always end up with one tray of the same stupid type of tomatoes... I don't want to spend money on 10 different types of tomato seeds just to get one plant from each since my space is limited.

Maybe that'd be a good business for someone - selling mixed seeds!

  14. Kate, maybe next year we can order different seeds and swap some!

  15. What the heck are you doing in the garden this year? Everything is crazy big.

  16. Things may be big, but the only summer crop so far that we're eating is zucchini. Everything else has stalled out and I'm afraid we'll miss the boat because nothing produces here once the heat cranks up.
