The second planting of cucumbers was put in the ground in June and are giving me some cucumbers, but sadly, the worms are getting them first. Every time you see a cucumber, you see a clustered egg sac like below.
Then, if you look closely at the cucumber itself, it's riddled with holes and sure enough, not in the hole right above my thumb, but the one above that, you can see the little speckled worm trying to run for his life back into his hole.
Not sure how I'm going to stop them with this newest planting of cucumbers. I don't remember those worms coming out so early last year. Maybe I'll see about putting pantyhose or something around them to deter them from boring in, but maybe I'm just making that up. We'll see how it goes.
Speaking of worms....I've got two more keychain designs up on the keychains website. Both of these are perfect for teacher gifts.

3rd round of cucumbers! Wow, those worms are annoying! Luckily we haven't seen any worms in our neck of the woods.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen the cuke worms, but mine are covered in squash bugs! Thinking the summer garden is going to start getting ripped out over the next month and hoping temps will allow some pleasant chore time out there!

ReplyDeleteMy cucumbers are getting ruined by them too. I guess a good soaking with sevin would stop them, but would kill the bees too...

ReplyDeleteSecond Summer... I wish we had a first! The temps have not gone over 78 most days here. I think we may have has a week total of 80+ My bell peppers are just starting to turn color and I have powdery mildew everywhere. I'll be pulling out most of the garden in a few weeks.

ReplyDeleteYuck, so happy to not have that pest in my garden. Kaolin clay might keep them at bay if you can find it. (I have some for my apple trees.)
